Interesting stuff from yield monitor that really creates a lot of questions. 2024 we had 550 acres of PP due to wet spring. We planted cover crops on all of those acres 450 acres was the blend in the picture and the other 100 acres was strait oats at 90 lbs/ acre. The oats cover crop was our highest yielding corn in 2025.
On the yield…

That’s some very good stuff there David. I was always under the impression you need the extra nitrogen because your current crop was gonna need it sooner then what your cover crop could break down to give it to your new crop.

(edited)I wanted to share with everyone a test I did this year to increase my aftermath corn grazing with hopes to increase grazing days and better palatability along with digestion of the aftermath corn without supplements.
Now these where planted at the same time so this is not a interseeded cover crop. In the grand scheme this could…

I have a question, will field peas planted this late in the year come back next spring? I have read that some people see this happen but I have never experienced it.

Did you plant Austrian Winter Peas or some other type of pea? I am not sure if Austrian Winter Peas will survive the winter in South Dakota if we don’t get alot of snow. I know the winter peas did survive winter when I worked in Nebraska but it only got down to -15 that year.

Good question. I haven’t planted anything yet but I am looking at planting something in my pumpkin and sweet corn fields this fall, after soil temps drop to 50 degrees. I was thinking peas would be a good option that would green up early in the spring yet be easy to terminate when I want to plant in June.

We have a five way sedan/sorghum/millet mix that I was going to partially bale graze, swath graze and leave some intact standing for grazing and wind protection/snow catch. Any thoughts or suggestions? Especially on Swath Grazing. It did not freeze and is still green and growing and we got 4 inches of rain last week so the potential is there…

I also should’ve said it is a 200 acre field and there is a water tank on the north end and on the south end basically right in the middle
I would like to bring the cows into this mix before weaning for a few weeks to have the Calves gain as much as possible during this time of year. Thoughts on that as well if we should wait or turn them in…

Tomatoes are finally starting to ripen in large numbers. Does anyone have any theories on why they seem so late all across the country this year?

Does anyone have any tips on setting seed rates on drills when your trying to plant 15 species cover crops or grazing mix
View more comments-
If using an air drill do the calibration and you will be fine as long as the seed is mixed well and isnt prone to settling out while driving to the field.
Box drills will be difficult from my experience.

Before we added a scale to our box drill we would measure 100’ and run seed thru 1 unit per box, catch it with a coffee can, and weigh it. We typically had it close enough in 2-3 tries. There are calibration widgets out there but have never used one. We didn’t have too much trouble with seed settling out. We usually load for 40-50 acres.…
