Going into the second year of on farm trial using no-till, cover crops and cattle to convert prior pasture into crop acres. To at least maintain soil structure or possibly improve it
Year #1 2023
Late spring herbicide pass followed by 2 different cover crop mixes one was a grazing blend and the other was a salty blend leftover in the seeder. Cattle grazed elsewhere until December because weather was so nice before bringing them here to over winter. With a the mild winter we had the amount of supplemental hay needed was lower than expected.
Year #2 2024
Just finished seeding oaring into the stubble yesterday. Following harvest I’ll plant a cover to graze again this fall. Considering including something that will overwinter and plant soybeans into the growing cover before spraying it off and then the next year after that plant corn.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
