can we (has anyone?) use a roller crimper to kill rye a week or more after planting soybeans and NOT negatively affect the population(more than 5-8%) loss? I did increase our planting population by a little over 10% on this field that is super heavy and typically wet and half usually drowns out so trying to keep the Rye living as long as possible to use up some moisture, pump carbon in and open up the soil. I believe the risk is worth it for weed control and letting the rye get mature enough to crimp
I don’t have X so can’t dig into those posts, but make sure the rye is out of the vegetative state or it could stand up again. We’ve always had aspirations of crimping but time usually gets away from us and we fall back on roundup and let the rye lay down on its own. Has worked well for us the last few years. This year the rye was the tallest it’s ever been while planting so we’ll see how it goes.
