      Todd Boesen posted an update

I wanted to share with everyone a test I did this year to increase my aftermath corn grazing with hopes to increase grazing days and better palatability along with digestion of the aftermath corn without supplements.

Now these where planted at the same time so this is not a interseeded cover crop. In the grand scheme this could be planted with one machine in one pass. Next year 🤞🏼

I started with a burn down chem pass of roundup, artrazine and dual2. Was the only chem applied 300lbs of nitrogen was broadcast applied the same day as seeding was done. May 30 when I was able to get both pieces of equipment together.

Stared by setting air seeder up to apply 3-4lbs to acre of a long day Milo on 30in centers. Followed immediately with a corn planter on 30in splitting the rows to try and achieve 15in rows. Do have some in the 10/20 range as the corn planters wanted to fall into the dead furrow from the air seeder. Corn population was a flat 23,500. The outside rounds and 2 5 acre strips in the field where also just straight corn. With no Milo.

So 80acres total 60 acres with Milo in it with

Milo emerges first then about 5 weeks later the corn take over in height of the Milo. Some short rain made me wonder where this was gonna really end but with 15in of precip for the growing season I thought it did well

Onto harvest the Milo pulled through the corn head with no issues left head in tact.

Seed guy estimated 50bpa of Milo.

Corn averaged 153bpa in both the Milo and the non Milo strips. Kinda surprising

      Aftermath grazing

153bpa corn is 1.88 aums/acre 50bu Milo is .61 aums/acre using that as the calculator figures are based on harvested crop.

So this is something I plan to try next year I’m gonna try and find a 15in planter as then I could do this in one pass and less time.
