I have a question, will field peas planted this late in the year come back next spring? I have read that some people see this happen but I have never experienced it.

Did you plant Austrian Winter Peas or some other type of pea? I am not sure if Austrian Winter Peas will survive the winter in South Dakota if we don’t get alot of snow. I know the winter peas did survive winter when I worked in Nebraska but it only got down to -15 that year.

Good question. I haven’t planted anything yet but I am looking at planting something in my pumpkin and sweet corn fields this fall, after soil temps drop to 50 degrees. I was thinking peas would be a good option that would green up early in the spring yet be easy to terminate when I want to plant in June.

I haven’t had any peas survive the winter. Even with snow cover along fence rows. Hairy Vetch has been the best legume to survive for me.

Hi Chris,
You may want to try some northern sourced hairy vetch seed or cereal rye. That likely will overwinter.

Are you also from around here, Fl
