We have a five way sedan/sorghum/millet mix that I was going to partially bale graze, swath graze and leave some intact standing for grazing and wind protection/snow catch. Any thoughts or suggestions? Especially on Swath Grazing. It did not freeze and is still green and growing and we got 4 inches of rain last week so the potential is there to get some regrowth and hopefully avoid prussic acid problems. My thought is to cut strips in the field for electric fence and high enough to leave about 2 feet high stubble so that there’s still plenty of green matter on the bottom to photosynthesize and regrow and it’ll keep the swaths up off of the ground, which May provide more habitat for the birds underneath and should be easier on tires and more attached to the soil and catch more snow this winter. Or do you think it’ll be worse for Cows’s eyes to leave at 2 feet high instead of 6 inches of stubble? And possibly more dangerous swathing now versus just letting it stand for Prussic acid risk? Thanks for any input and insights😊
Hans Klopp, Van Mansheim and Courtney Geppert-
I also should’ve said it is a 200 acre field and there is a water tank on the north end and on the south end basically right in the middle
I would like to bring the cows into this mix before weaning for a few weeks to have the Calves gain as much as possible during this time of year. Thoughts on that as well if we should wait or turn them in while it’s still green before it freezes/snows?
